Malpelo Island is part of Colombia. Together with Cocos and the Galapagos, it's usually dubbed 'the Golden Triangle of diving'.

Located in the heart of the Pacific ocean some 490km off the harbour town of Buenaventura, Malpelo is a seamount that plunges down to 4000m of depth. It's exposed to strong oceanic currents that bring tons of marine life.

We owe this awesome footage to Edward Herreno, an underwater photographer and filmmaker, who lives in Costa Rica and logged hundreds of dives off Malpelo between 2004 and 2010. He's now part of Plongeurs TV team.

Malpelo is only accessible by live-aboard dive boats. Most tour operators offer trips to Malpelo. Take note that the diving there is not for the faint-hearted; expect deep dives, low visibility and strong currents. For experienced (and wealthy) divers only.
